STATIONARY

Western Washington Stationary Engineers Training Trust

Stationary members, did you know as part of your contract you may be eligible for journeyman-level training classes or apprenticeship programs?

These opportunities are funded by employers who contribute to the Western Washington Stationary Engineers Training Trust. Apprentices are only required to purchase books and materials which are reimbursed at 75% upon completion of the course.

Journeyman Training Classes

We provide journeyman-level training classes to fulfill ongoing accreditation requirements and broaden skills that are valuable to you and your employer.

Apprenticeship Programs

A great way to advance skills is to "earn while you learn" through one of our Washington State approved training programs!

Stationary Engineers Training Program

*The information below applies to the Facilities Maintenance Mechanics Training Program with the exception of some class variation

Stationary Engineers are needed wherever boilers, diesel engines, electric motors, refrigeration, generators, pumps, operational systems, and compressors are used in a fixed location — hence the term “stationary”.

They provide valuable, often behind the scenes work, to literally keep facilities running such as hospitals, hotels, high-rise buildings, schools, public entities, dairies, bakeries, and more.

During this 4-year program, apprentices work with journey-level engineers for on-the-job training while also completing classroom instruction at Renton Technical College.

To reach journey-level status an apprentice must complete 8,000 hours of on-the-job training and all required courses equating to a minimum of 576 hours of classroom instruction. Once achieved, they will receive a nationally recognized “certificate of completion” from the Washington State Department of Labor and Industries and Renton Technical College.

An apprentice normally starts at 60% of the contract journeymen scale. With on the job and supplemental classroom training combined the apprentice will receive a wage progression increase of 5% for each 1,000 hours of on-the-job training and 72 hours of supplemental classroom instruction completed.

Curriculum includes, but is not limited to:

  • Boiler Operations
  • Building Controls
  • Computer Classes
  • Critical Systems
  • Electric Motor Controls
  • Energy Conservation
  • Hazardous Waste Management
  • Human Relations & Leadership
  • HVAC Systems
  • Indoor Air Quality
  • Industrial Electricity
  • Industrial First Aid/CPR
  • Mechanical Blue Print Reading
  • Pneumatics
  • Preventative Maintenance
  • Programmable Logic Controls
  • Refrigeration Systems
  • Welding

Facilities Custodial Services Technician Training Program

Facilities Custodial Services Technicians usually work in, but not exclusively, public school settings. In this 2-year program, an apprentice learns limited building maintenance, facilities operation, care, and cleaning. Apprentices work with journey-level technicians for their on-the-job training component and must complete classroom training.

To reach journey-level status an apprentice must complete 4,000 hours of on-the-job training and all required courses equating to a minimum of 288 hours of classroom instruction. Once achieved, they will receive a nationally recognized “certificate of completion” from the Washington State Department of Labor and Industries.

An apprentice normally starts at 70% of the contract journeymen scale. With on the job and supplemental classroom training combined the apprentice will receive a wage progression increase of 5% for the first 1,000 hours of on-the-job training and 72 hours of supplemental classroom instruction completed. The next two increases will be at 10% for every 1,000 hours of on-the-job training and 72 hours of supplemental classroom instruction, with the final increase at 5% for the completion of the apprenticeship program.

Curriculum includes, but is not limited to:

  • Basic Computers
  • Basic HVAC
  • Basic Electricity
  • Boiler Operators License (Grade 4)
  • Conflict Resolution
  • Handline Building Emergencies
  • Sustainable Custodial Housekeeping
